This is a fantastic video! We moved to Atascocita in 1983! That first grocery store you mentioned at 1960 and Pinehurst Trail was called Stu’s! Mr. Hay ( ow deceased) was the manager! There was a store next to it similar to a dollar store, but I can’t remember the name! There was also a grocery store at Timber Forest and 1960 when we moved here in 1983 called Food City (north side of 1960]. In the early 80’s, Brookshire’s built across 1960 on the south side! Not sure Atascocita was ever annexed by the City of Houston. Properties on the lake are still considered City of Houston. They get to pay COH taxes!
Interesting tidbit! The McKay Bridge going into Huffman is also an emergency landing strip for Bush IAH! It is two miles long, and wide enough to land a jet!
Way, way back, before Lake Houston was built, there was only a low-water crossing South of the railroad trestle. You can still see the roadbed with the depth finder on your boat!
Hi Rebecca, thank you for your comments and especially for pointing out the incorrect reference to Jefferson home. I thought that I might be mispronouncing it. I was told the grocery store was called Gerlands by a couple of folks. Someone named Nancy posted they worked there as a cashier in 79/80. That was her senior year in HS. She said she rode her bike to work, and FM 1960 was one lane in each direction.
